Weather Closings & Alerts

Inclement Weather - Emergency Closings

School administration takes decisions to close school due to inclement weather conditions very seriously. As with most decisions that affect literally thousands of people, it will impact individuals differently.

The most important consideration in the decision is children’s safety. Can we safely transport children to and from school? Many people and factors are involved. We monitor the weather conditions with information from national and local weather services.

While district staff has the responsibility to close school due to weather, no decision of ours overrides the judgment as a parent. By no means are the decisions meant to take decision-making authority away from families if they feel individual circumstances may be different for them. As in any circumstance, if you believe travel is unsafe for you and/or your student(s), we defer to you to make the best decision necessary based on the circumstances presented.

Extreme Cold
Lake Geneva Schools may close if the National Weather Service issues a Wind Chill Warning (issued when sustained -35 degree windchills are expected) for our area for the time just before the school day begins. Schools will not be closed if there is a wind chill advisory for the county.

When Lake Geneva Schools are closed for the day, it also means that all activities scheduled in school buildings for that day are canceled. This includes all Lake Geneva Schools after-school programs.

Communication Channels
In the event that school would need to be closed due to inclement weather or other causes, it will be communicated via several local or area radio and TV stations and the following school communication channels. Please check these communication channels rather than calling your child’s school.

  • Local Television and Radio Stations
  • An alert message will be displayed on the district homepage
  • School Messenger Phone Call: School families that have a phone number on file with our Districts will receive a phone call.
  • School Messenger Text Alert: Households that have a cell number on file in PowerSchool and who have opted into received text messages will receive a text alert.
  • Facebook: Each school will announce closings & cancellations on their Facebook page

Days missed for inclement weather or other causes may be made up in order to comply with district policy and state statutes.
