Badger High School Incident Update 11/24/18

November 24, 2018

Dear Badger High School and Lake Geneva Middle School Families,

This message is to update you on the incidents of Tuesday, November 20th. The timeline of events began the evening of November 19th when a complaint was reported to the Lake Geneva Police Department to investigate a concern over a potential threat to Badger High School. Police immediately investigated the claim and determined the threat was not credible. On Tuesday, November 20th reports came into the Badger High School office from individuals claiming they heard there was a threat of a shooting that would occur at Badger High School. Screenshots of various social media posts were provided with these reports. Lake Geneva Police Department conducted another investigation and spoke with people associated with these posts. It was determined that these individuals never actually saw or heard of a specific threat against the school but rather they had seen it posted by somebody else. School administration, in cooperation with the Lake Geneva Police Department, made the decision to remain in session for the day with the presence of extra officers.

On November 20th, around 1:30 p.m., it was reported that a message was written in a bathroom stall at Badger, “Shoot 2:30”.  At that time school administration, in cooperation with the Lake Geneva Police Department, assessed the situation and school administration decided to go into early dismissal. School administration worked with Dousman Transport to arrange buses to pick-up students at Badger High School at 2:10 p.m. Although there was no threat made at Lake Geneva Middle School, school administration arranged for middle school students to be picked up as well due to bus schedule logistics.

A police investigation is ongoing with the full cooperation of the Lake Geneva Schools and Badger High School. School will resume Monday, November 26th as planned. Please have discussions with your student(s) about the seriousness that comes with actions such as the events of November 20th. This is not anything that can be considered a “joke” or a “prank”.

If your student has information in regards to the threat in the restroom, please contact the Lake Geneva Police Department at 262-248-4455. Lake Geneva Police Department is offering a $500 reward for the arrest and conviction of person or persons responsible.

School safety and security is a strategic objective for Lake Geneva Schools. We are thankful for the cooperation and assistance the schools have received from Dousman Transportation, and the following Police Departments: Lake Geneva, Village of Bloomfield, Town of Geneva, Town of Linn and the Walworth County Sheriff's Office.

Sincerely, Jim Gottinger
Superintendent
